Creating surface model for InfraWorks 360 from point cloud data

It is possible to create surface model from point cloud for example for InfraWorks 360 in many ways.

  • Create surface model in InfraWorks 360 from RCS or RCP data.

1. RCS or RCP files are created with free Autodesk ReCap 360 software from source data, for example LAS. Select first new scan project and select source files. Click next button marked in picture, select advanced settings and select coordinate system in Current and Target fields.

2. Resulting files are imported to InfraWorks 360 according to these instructions 

3. Surface model is then created according to these instructions 

  • Create surface model in AutoCAD Map 3D from RCP or RCS data and import surface model to InfraWorks 360
  1. Prepare data in ReCap 360 as instructed earlier.
  2. Set coordinate system in Map 3D and add RCP or RCS file with POINTCLOUDATTACH command. Use “Use geographic location” setting.
  3. Create raster surface model with MAPCREATEPCSURFACE command. If data is classified, Filter function can be used to select only Ground points. It is also possible adjust level of detail of surface model with slider.
  4. Import surface model as raster data in InfraWorks 360.

  • Create surface model directly from source data, for example LAS, in AutoCAD Map 3D and import surface model to InfraWorks 360
  1. Create ISD file and set coordinate system. This functionality can be used with MAPPOINTCLOUDMANAGER command. If data is classified, filter function can be used at this stage to select only Ground-points. More instructions in this link 
  2. When ISD file is added with Add to Map function, right-click it in Task Pane and select Create Surface. Filter function can be used to select only Ground points. Level of detail of surface can be changed with cell size option. Detailed instructions are available in this link 
  3. Import surface model as raster data in InfraWorks 360.

 

AutoCAD Civil 3D functionality can also be used. Civil 3D includes nearly all AutoCAD Map 3D functions so previously mentioned Map 3D methods are also available.

 

  • Create surface model (TIN) in AutoCAD Civil 3D from RCP or RCS data and import surface model to InfraWorks 360. Civil 3D includes also advanced editing functions for TIN surfaces.
  1. Create RCP or RCS in Recap 360 as instructed earlier.
  2. Import data to Civil 3D with POINTCLOUDATTACH command.
  3. If data has classification information, only ground data can be used according to the following instructions. Insert point cloud in Map 3D Task Pane (if it is not open type MAPWSPACE and select On). Click Data button and select Add Point Cloud Data | From drawing object. Select point cloud and click OK. Right-click point cloud in Task Pane and select Filter Point Cloud. Ensure that Classification is selected in Filter by field. Select 2 Ground and click Apply filter.
  4. Select then point cloud in drawing area. Point Cloud tab opens in ribbon. Click Create Surface from Point Cloud button, Non-Ground Point Filtering method can be “No filter”, other methods are useful especially in situations when no classification data is available.
  5. Import created model in InfraWorks 360 directly from DWG or use different export formats (raster, LandXML)

 

  • Create TIN surface model directly from source data, for example LAS, in AutoCAD Civil 3D and import surface model to InfraWorks 360
  1. Create ISD file. Right-click Point Clouds in Prospector and select Create Point Cloud. Select files in Source Data part and define coordinate system.
  2. If data is classified, only ground points can be selected. Right-click point cloud under Point Clouds group in Prospector and select Point Cloud Properties. Select LIDAR Point Classification as style and click OK.
  3. Right-click point cloud again in Prospector and select Edit Point Cloud Style. Select only 2 Ground in Classification tab and click OK.
  4. Right-click point cloud again in Prospector and select Add Points to Surface to create surface.
  5. Import created model in InfraWorks 360 directly from DWG or use different export formats (raster, LandXML).
